How Mace Flow
Changed My Life
After more than 20 years of searching for the right way to train, I finally found a tool that transformed not only my body, but also my mind and the way I experience movement.
The Endless Search
Since I started working out, almost 20 years ago, I searched for the “perfect” workout. A workout that achieved all my fitness goals, gave me the body of my dreams, made me strong and most importantly was simple to do and fit within my life.

Over the years, I tried almost every type of training: traditional weightlifting, Cardio workouts, High Intensity Training, yoga, Bikram yoga, pilates, calisthenics, CrossFit, you name it, on top of sports like basketball, football, tennis, and swimming.

Yet despite all that effort, I never seemed to reach the results I wanted.
My posture was still poor. I had mild scoliosis, rounded shoulders, and a rounded upper back. I did not gain the muscle I aspired to. My body felt unbalanced. I had constant neck and back pain.

And the frustrating part was that I worked very hard. I trained consistently and pushed myself through many different training systems, but something was still missing.

Three years ago, my life was not in the best place psychologically. I was unhappy in my sedentary job, suffering from a painful breakup, and constantly stuck in cycles of overthinking. I often felt depressed and disconnected from my body.

Then one day in 2023, while scrolling through YouTube, I came across a video of someone swinging a steel ball attached to a handle.
It was a steel mace.

I was immediately mesmerized. Something about the movement pulled me in. I ended up binge watching dozens of videos of people from all over the world flowing with the mace.

The movements looked powerful, fluid, and almost artistic.
I immediately went to Amazon and bought my first mace, a 2 kg steel mace. I remember counting the hours until it arrived.

When it did, I started experimenting on my own. I did not even look for a teacher. For some reason, I felt like I already had the knowledge within me. I just needed to bring it out.

Less than a year later, I had become highly competent in mace flow. I eventually became a certified mace instructor, quit my job, left the country I was living in, and returned home to start my mace training business.

Here are all the ways the Mace has transformed my life.

“After two decades of searching through almost every training method, I found that Mace Flow was the closest to perfect. By ‘perfect,’ I mean achieving a great deal of benefit with remarkable simplicity.”

What is a Mace?
The mace is an ancient training tool inspired by historical weapons used by warriors, particularly in regions such as Persia and India thousands of years ago. Modern steel maces are exercise tools with asymmetrical weight distribution: a long handle with a weighted end, often shaped like a ball.

Because the weight sits far from the hands, the mace creates leverage, which challenges strength, stability, and coordination even with relatively light weights. Maces can be made from steel, wood, or other materials.

Overall Physical Benefits
One of the first things I noticed was muscle growth in my shoulders and chest, areas where I had struggled for years.

My personal hypothesis is that the heavy loads required in traditional weightlifting sometimes created too much stress for my body to recover optimally. With the mace, the loads were lighter, but the leverage and full body integration created a strong muscular stimulus without feeling overly taxing.

Typical mace weights (4 to 6 kg) may seem light, but because of the long lever arm and rotational movements, they activate many muscle groups at once. I began to see visible muscle development without the constant soreness I used to experience with heavy lifting.

Another thing I loved was that training felt more integrated.
Instead of separating my routine into stretching, lifting, mobility work, and recovery, mace flow seemed to combine many of these elements into one practice.

While swinging the mace, my body was simultaneously:
  • Strengthening
  • Stabilizing
  • Rotating
  • Mobilizing
It simplified my training and removed the confusion of trying to perfectly balance different types of workouts.
3
Posture
I had struggled with poor posture since I was about 14. I grew tall very quickly and developed rounded shoulders, a forward head posture, and mild scoliosis.

Over the years, I tried many solutions: physiotherapy, chiropractic care, mobility programs, and corrective exercises.

Sometimes I would feel temporary relief, but the problem always returned.
Mace training forced me to maintain proper posture during movement. To control the swinging weight safely, I had to stay tall, keep my shoulders organized, and engage my upper back and core.

Over time, I began noticing my middle back becoming stronger and my shoulders opening up.

The movements strengthened the muscles responsible for posture while teaching my body to move with better alignment.

4
Joint Pain
For years, I experienced pain at the front of my shoulder whenever I did exercises like bench presses or shoulder presses. I had previously been diagnosed with inflammation of the supraspinatus tendon in my rotator cuff.
About two months into consistent mace training, the pain gradually disappeared.

One possible reason is that mace training involves multi planar movement, meaning the joints move through rotation, circles, and arcs rather than only straight lines.

Our joints evolved to move in many directions. The rotational patterns of mace flow can help strengthen stabilizing muscles and improve joint control. For me, this seemed to significantly reduce my shoulder discomfort.

5
Coordination
When I first watched experienced mace practitioners performing complex flows, I thought:

“There is no way I will ever be able to do that.”

But with consistent practice, something surprising happened.
Within a few weeks, my coordination began improving rapidly.
Mace flow requires the shoulders, torso, hips, and feet to work together.

Over time, I learned to link these movements into one continuous rhythm.
The result was a feeling of balance and harmony in my body, and it felt like my brain was creating entirely new movement patterns.

6
Core Strength
Because the mace is constantly moving around the body, maintaining balance and control requires continuous core engagement.

You cannot swing a mace efficiently without stabilizing your spine and coordinating your hips and torso.

What surprised me was that I no longer needed to isolate “core exercises.” Almost every mace movement naturally trained the core.
My lower abdominal strength improved significantly, and over time, my six pack became more visible.
7
Mental Wellbeing
The biggest impact mace training had on me was psychological.

For years, I struggled with overthinking.
I knew intellectually that one way to calm the mind was to move awareness into the body. I tried meditation, but often found it difficult to sit still without being overwhelmed by my thoughts.

Then I read that, for some people, movement based meditation can be more accessible than still meditation. That is exactly what mace flow became for me. When you are swinging a heavy steel ball around your body and over your head, your attention has to be fully present. Your awareness naturally moves into your body and into your senses. The mind quiets down.

Your thoughts may still exist, but they no longer dominate your attention.
Over time, this practice helped me develop the ability to bring my awareness into my body even when I was not training. It became a powerful tool for calming my mind and regulating my emotions.

Final Thoughts
Discovering mace training completely changed my relationship with movement, health, and even my mental state. What began as curiosity turned into a passion, and eventually into my mission with Nomad Strength.

This blog is just the beginning. In future posts, I will explore:

  • The fundamental mace movements
  • How mace flow improves mobility and strength
